What If
What if -
this was the loveliest moment of my life?
What if the way the light is falling,
and the way my body is feeling right now,
is as good as it gets?
What if -
everything that’s gone before me,
everything that’s happened,
was truly and completely perfect?
What if -
nothing comes next.
Nothing,
except my willingness to be present for it?
Nothing,
except the way the air touches my skin
now.
Nothing,
except the way my body somehow
knows how to draw in the air
from all around me -
so it can oxygenate my blood in a single breath
over and over again.
Nothing,
except the way a deep inhale inspires me
to stay here for this
moment and the next.
Nothing,
except the exhale
as I breathe back out into the world -
that which only moments ago
was deep within my lungs.
Air meeting air,
breath mingling with breath -
we share so much intimacy
without ever needing to meet.
How much courage, presence, or simplicity do I need
to trust that my very next breath
will meet me when I need it?
And when it doesn’t??
Will I remember this poem?
The poem about this being the loveliest,
most perfect
moment of my life.
